VAT Registration: When You Must, and When You Might Want To

You must register for VAT once your taxable turnover passes the HMRC threshold in any rolling 12-month period — not the tax year, but any 12 months, so it's worth checking regularly, not just once a year.

Voluntary registration

If most of your customers are VAT-registered businesses, registering early can let you reclaim VAT on purchases without the downside of adding VAT to invoices your customers can already reclaim.

What changes once you're registered

  • You must charge VAT on applicable sales and file quarterly returns
  • You can reclaim VAT on eligible business purchases
  • Making Tax Digital rules apply to your VAT record-keeping

Getting the scheme right — standard, flat rate, or cash accounting — matters as much as the registration decision itself, and the best fit depends on your margins and customer base.
